Being a veterinary office in Davis Square, it's not just our clients that are Somerville dog owners -- it's us as well. And as members of the community, there are certain things we've found to be true for us, our friends and our dogs. If you're looking to get outside and hang out with other Somerville dog owners, you're in luck --there are all kinds of great things that you and your best friend can do here in the area.
Read on for our top picks, and be sure to let us know yours!
1. Every April, there is an Annual Low-Cost Somerville Rabies Clinic at the Department of Public Works
If there's one thing every Somerville dog owner should make sure that they keep up with, it's their dog's rabies shot! With the amount of time spent outside, the last thing that you want is for your poor pup to get bit and end up with rabies. Thankfully, every April here in Somerville, the City hosts a low-cost rabies clinic that costs between $10-30, which includes the City license for dogs as well -- and our very own Dr. Adam Parker is one of the vets on site handling the shots!
2. Every September, You can Participate in the Somerville Dog Festival
The Somerville Dog Festival is one of the best times to be a Somerville dog owner! Hosted every September by the Somerville Foundation for Animals, the festival is held in Trum Field from 10 AM to 3 PM and includes group activities for your dogs, a silent auction and even a play starring some of the more talented doc actors. Porter Square Vet is heavily involved with the Festival every year, and all charitable contirubtions go to local shelters as well as the Somerville police Vest-a-Dog program that gives bulletproof vests to the police pups.
3. Also in September, There's the Doggy Fun Run and 5k
If you're a Somerville dog owner and you like to get outside with your pal, the Somerville Doggy Fun and Run and 5k is a great way to do it. A family-fun event, participants can either run or walk to the 5k loop around the Mystic River Bend Reservation for a fun afternoon of exercise and socializing for your dog. The event benefits the Animal Rescue League of Boston, which is helping to build a new dog park in Medford.
4. For a Good Time, visit Fresh Pond Reservoir and Park in Cambridge with your Dog
There are a lot of outdoor options to take your dog in Somerville and the surrounding areas, but one of the most popular destination for Somerville dog owners is the Fresh Pond Reservoir and Park. With beautiful open fields and lots of room for your dog to run around and exercise, it's a great destination when you're in the mood to spend extra time outdoors with your pal. Just don't forget your running shoes!
